Editorial Policies

Last updated: April 4, 2026

Festival Abroad is committed to publishing content that is accurate, fair, independent, and genuinely useful to festival-goers. These policies govern everything we publish — from festival guides and artist profiles to travel planning tools and editorial features — and apply to all staff, contributors, and third-party content partners.

1. Editorial Independence

Festival Abroad maintains a clear and absolute separation between editorial content and commercial activity. No advertiser, sponsor, affiliate partner, or festival organiser may influence, direct, or review our editorial content prior to publication.

  • Commercial relationships — including affiliate commissions, sponsored placements, or partnership arrangements — do not determine which festivals, artists, or destinations we cover.
  • Editorial decisions about coverage, rankings, and recommendations are made solely on the basis of relevance and quality for our readers.
  • No payment, gift, free ticket, or hospitality arrangement may be accepted in exchange for positive editorial coverage.
  • Sponsored or commercially supported content is always clearly labelled as such and is visually distinct from editorial content. Affiliate links are integrated natively into the site experience; a site-wide affiliate disclosure appears in the footer of every page.

1.1 Accuracy Review vs. Copy Approval

We may share direct quotations or specific factual claims with interview subjects prior to publication for the sole purpose of accuracy verification. This does not constitute editorial review or approval. Subjects may flag factual errors or misquotations only — they may not alter our framing, editorial conclusions, question structure, or request the removal of content they simply do not wish to see published. Final editorial decisions remain entirely with Festival Abroad.

2. Accuracy and Verification

We take accuracy seriously. Before publishing, every material claim — including festival dates, lineup announcements, venue capacities, ticket prices, and travel information — is verified against at least one primary or authoritative source.

2.1 Primary Sources

Our primary sources include official festival websites and social channels, artist management and record label announcements, ticketing platforms, venue operators, national tourism bodies, and travel infrastructure providers. We do not treat unverified social media posts, rumours, or unofficial fan accounts as primary sources.

2.2 Data and Statistics

Any data, statistics, or figures published on Festival Abroad — including attendance estimates, capacity figures, historical attendance records, and music industry metrics — are sourced from verifiable datasets or credible third-party research where available.

2.3 Time-Sensitive Information

Festival lineups, travel conditions, visa requirements, and ticket availability change frequently. We include publication and update dates on time-sensitive content and encourage readers to verify critical details — particularly travel logistics — directly with the relevant operators before making arrangements.

3. Commercial Disclosure

We are committed to full transparency about how Festival Abroad is funded and how commercial relationships may affect what appears on the site. This is consistent with the requirements of the UK's ASA/CAP Code, the EU's Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, the US FTC's endorsement guidelines, and equivalent standards in Australia (ACCC), Canada (Competition Bureau), and other regions we serve.

3.1 Affiliate Links

Some links on Festival Abroad — including links to flight search results, hotel booking platforms, accommodation providers, and ticket partners — are affiliate links. These are integrated natively into the site and are not individually distinguished from non-affiliate links. A site-wide disclosure appears in the footer of every page. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase or booking, we may receive a small commission from the partner at no additional cost to you. The presence of an affiliate link does not influence whether or how a festival, destination, or service is covered editorially.

3.2 Sponsored Content

Festival Abroad may produce or publish content in connection with commercial partners. Sponsors have no editorial control over the content they commission. Festival Abroad reserves the right to decline or withdraw any commercially associated content that does not meet our editorial standards.

3.3 Press Trips and Hospitality

Where a contributor has attended a festival as a guest of the organiser, received complimentary tickets, or participated in a press trip, this will be disclosed within the relevant article. Acceptance of press access does not guarantee coverage and does not imply a positive editorial position.

4. Fairness and Impartiality

We aim to cover the festival landscape with balance and fairness across genres, regions, sizes, and cultures. Our editorial policies require that:

  • Coverage is not withheld or restricted on the basis of a festival's or artist's commercial relationship — or absence of one — with Festival Abroad.
  • Criticism, when warranted, is fair, proportionate, and based on verifiable fact rather than opinion presented as fact.
  • Where we cover an event, organisation, or individual in a way that could be considered negative, we will make reasonable efforts to seek a response before publication where it is practical to do so.
  • Festival Abroad does not produce editorial content whose purpose is to damage the reputation of a competitor, individual, or organisation without factual basis.

5. Corrections Policy

We correct errors promptly and transparently. If you believe any information on Festival Abroad is inaccurate, outdated, or misleading, please contact us at the address below.

  • Minor corrections (spelling, formatting, factual updates to time-sensitive details) are applied directly with an updated date noted on the article.
  • Substantive corrections (material factual errors that could mislead readers) are accompanied by a clearly visible correction note at the top of the article, identifying what has changed and when.
  • We do not silently delete or alter content to conceal errors after publication.
  • Reader-submitted corrections are reviewed within five working days.

6. Sensitive Content and Harm Avoidance

Festival culture can intersect with sensitive topics including substance use, mental health, crowd safety, and extreme weather. We take our duty of care to readers seriously.

6.1 Safety Information

Where content touches on topics with direct safety implications — including heat and hydration, crowd management, travel health, or medication interactions — we include signposting to authoritative sources such as national health bodies, festival safety organisations, or emergency services.

6.2 Substance Use

We do not promote or glorify illegal drug use. Where harm reduction information is relevant — for example, links to official festival welfare organisations — it may be included in an objective, non-promotional context. Any such content complies with the laws and regulatory guidance of the UK, EU member states, and other applicable jurisdictions.

6.3 Vulnerable Audiences

Festival Abroad's content is intended for adults aged 16 and over. Content that could be harmful or inappropriate for younger audiences is not published without appropriate content warnings.

7. Diversity, Representation, and Inclusion

Festival culture is global, diverse, and built on community. Our editorial output should reflect that.

  • We are committed to representing a diverse range of festivals, genres, geographies, and communities — not only the most commercially prominent.
  • We do not use language that stereotypes, demeans, or marginalises people on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, religion, or nationality.
  • We review artist and festival imagery to ensure it does not perpetuate harmful or reductive representations.
  • Editorial decisions about coverage reflect an ongoing effort to avoid systemic biases in what — and who — gets attention.

8. User-Generated Content

Where Festival Abroad publishes or features user-generated content — including reviews, comments, or social media posts — the following standards apply:

  • User-generated content is moderated before or after publication to remove content that is defamatory, hateful, harassing, or factually misleading.
  • We do not manufacture, fabricate, or incentivise false reviews or testimonials.
  • Users who submit content grant Festival Abroad a licence to reproduce it in connection with the service; they retain ownership of their original content.
  • We respond to takedown requests relating to user-generated content in accordance with applicable law, including the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) and the UK Online Safety Act.

9. Artificial Intelligence and Automated Content

Festival Abroad may use AI-assisted tools to support content production — including research, summarisation, and translation. AI-assisted content is held to the same accuracy, tone, and editorial standards as human-written content, and we do not use AI tools to fabricate quotes, invented sources, or fictional event details.

10. Copyright and Intellectual Property

All original content published on Festival Abroad — including articles, guides, data visualisations, and original photography — is the property of Festival Abroad Media LLC or its licensed contributors and is protected by copyright law.

  • Third-party images, artist photos, and festival imagery are used only with appropriate licence, permission, or under fair use / fair dealing provisions.
  • We respond promptly to legitimate copyright removal requests in line with the DMCA (US), the EU Copyright Directive, and UK copyright law.
  • Quotations from external sources are attributed clearly; we do not reproduce substantial portions of third-party content without permission.

11. Governing Standards and Regional Applicability

Festival Abroad is operated by Festival Abroad Media LLC and serves readers in the UK, European Union, North America, Australia, and beyond. These editorial policies are designed to meet or exceed the standards set by the following regulatory frameworks and industry bodies:

  • United Kingdom: ASA/CAP Code (advertising and sponsored content); Ofcom content standards; ICO guidance on editorial processing of personal data.
  • European Union: EU Unfair Commercial Practices Directive; Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD); Digital Services Act (DSA) for user-generated content.
  • United States: FTC Endorsement Guidelines (affiliate and sponsored content disclosure); DMCA (copyright).
  • Australia: ACCC guidelines on influencer and affiliate disclosure; Australian Press Council principles.
  • Canada: Competition Bureau guidance on deceptive marketing practices.

Where local law imposes stricter requirements than these policies, we apply the stricter standard.

12. Complaints and Feedback

We welcome feedback on our editorial standards and take complaints seriously. If you believe we have breached these policies — or any applicable legal or regulatory standard — please contact us using the details below. We will acknowledge your complaint within five working days and aim to resolve it within 20 working days.

If you are unsatisfied with our response, you may escalate to the relevant national regulator or press standards body in your jurisdiction.
